TOP 3 REASONS WHY PEOPLE FAIL TO ACHIEVE THEIR FITNESS GOALS Yes we all want to achieve the fitness goals we have set for ourselves, but sadly most people think that by spending hrs and hrs exercising, that will be enough to reach their goals.  How often have you seen a person training in the gym month after month, year after year and they still appear to be the same size and weight?   Truth is that exercise only contributes about one third to your overall success of reaching your goals.  In light of this, your trainer’s contribution or the amount of time you spend in the gym is only part of the formula to reaching and maintaining your success. So let’s look at the top 3 REASONS why people fail to achieve their fitness goals ......... 1) Mental Attitude - it is the general procrastination, laziness, and poor mental attitude about what you BELIEVE you can achieve 2) Poor dietary habits - most people think if asked will tell you that they eat well 3) Ineffective training routine - your workout is not right for you, it’s not geared towards helping you reach your goals MENTAL ATTITUDE So firstly, you need to actually believe that you can be thinner, you can weigh less, you can accomplish your goals, you can eat better and so on. You also need to visualise yourself as that person you want to become, so if you are aiming to lose 2 clothes sizes and be a size 34, then visualise yourself as that slim, toned person. Start to also confess it with your mouth so you can hear the positive renforcement of your words. Procastination is a very bad habit, it’s putting something off for tomorrow which actually could be done today.  It is putting off those things we feel uncomfortable doing, we don’t like to do, they provoke emotions we don’t like.  Let’s look at exercise for example.  say you are unfit and overweight, you identify that you need to do something about this, so you get yourself all geared up and start to work out for the first time, you realise wow this is really harder than I thought, I’m out of breath, I can’t accomplish much, so what happens is that feel despondent and you want to give up right there, thinking how will I ever make it. The mole hill has become a mountain and instead of breaking down the goal piece by piece, it’s one gigantic mountain looming over you. That’s already the end before you’ve started.  POOR DIETARY HABITS So looking at the 2nd point, poor dietary habits, first thing that comes to most people’s minds is diet, diet, diet..... Guess what, Diets DO WORK...!!! Yes, you will loose weight and in most instances, lose weight very quickly, BUT you will get to a place where either you will hit a plateau or you won’t be able to sustain the diet any longer and can’t keep the weight off.  Let’s be honest who can survive on green salad or grapes for the rest of their lives???  So what happens next is very tragic, after any failed diet, you will gain more weight than before.  The facts are: fat and muscle are two separate entities, so you can’t convert fat into muscle and vice versa.  Another fact: when you diet only (no exercise or resistance training), you will loose fat and muscle simultaneously.  Sad but true, think about someone who is starving, have you ever seen a picture of a starving person who has no fat on their body but has muscle??? They are sadly, skin and bone, all muscle and fat is lost because they’ve not eaten.  Another fact: muscle burns more calories than fat.  So considering the above, if you are dieting you will lose muscle and fat, this will result in a slower metabolism and less calories burnt by the body.   End result: you will loose weight quickly and then reach a plateau or frustration, whichever comes first, your metabolism by now has slowed down so much, that you are hardly burning any calories and your body starts to store the fat.  You give up on your diet and the weight piles back on again. INEFFECTIVE TRAINING ROUTINE So now to our last point, ineffective training routine.   You might be working with a trainer or by yourself, but the important question here is, is your workout right for you and your goals?  There is no point in working at each day for 2 hours and wasting so much precious time and you are get very little or mediocre results.  There are people who run on the treadmill for 1 hour every day or every 2nd day, but they don’t seem to lose much weight or drop clothes sizes.  It’s not about how many hours you spend in the gym or on that treadmill.  It’s about the effectiveness and intensity of your workout. You can do a 15 minute workout each day or a 30 minute workout every 2nd day at home and achieve more amazing results than someone spending hours and hours in the gym everyday.  BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER So to summarize, we need to realise that all 3 of these points work together to achieve our fitness  goals, one without the other is absolutely useless.  You can exercise “correctly” with the correct training workout and still not get great results because you are failing on your dietary habits and so on.  Sustainability of these habits and your decisioon to exercise and eat right is a lifestyle change, not a flash in the pan, once off attempt.  It's a change of mind set and attitude about yourself, your health and what you want to get out of life. Remember, it takes 21 days to form a new habit, exercising and eating correctly is a lifestyle change and choice, which you need to start with today and stick to it for 21 days to make sure that you are on the road to a forever changed lifestyle.  Good luck and don’t give up - Karen
